Why the Media hates us

"Wardriving" is the term given to hacker habit of driving around with a wireless-enabled laptop in the car, sniffing for wireless network access, either to simply freeload on the feed or invade other systems.

It's things like this which makes advanced computer users (like us) feel like the Media hates us. The media is spreading propaganda that wardrivers are out to attack networks in search of passwords and credit card numbers.

To correct them, "Wardriving" is the act of driving around with a wireless-enabled laptop sniffing for wireless network access. Nothing more.

What you do with this access is no different from plugging your laptop into a network port in the building. Whether it's hacking or using this access to check your email.

On a side note, I wonder if the charges would be the same for Individual 1, who walks up to a store, plugs into their ethernet port which is mounted on the outside wall and accesses their database, as for Individual 2, who accesses the same database using their open Wireless Access Point...
